Online Poker Law and Regulation
Online poker has different law regulation from the online gambling, although for the same issues the regulation for online gambling applied to the poker law. It is legal and regulated in many countries, including the Caribbean nations and most notably in United Kingdom.
In the United States, online poker was legalized and regulated in the bill of North Dakota state since February 2005. But the legislation demanded the online operations have to be physically located in the state. Later on the March 2005, the regulation was defeated by the State Senate when US Department of Justice stated that the online gaming may be illegal. This case affected the major online gaming companies. They stopped the advertisements on American media and change the strategy to advertise poker schools rather than stated poke site and feature the “this is not a gambling site” phrase.
Since then, online poker is stated as illegal in the United States. There was an incident when major online gaming sites were closed their operation in the United States in 2006. The incident caused the decrease of the stock values of online gaming companies. The last incident was on the 15th April 2011 when FBI shut down three poker websites, a grand jury charged 11 defendants and the website founder with bank fraud, money laundering and gambling law violation.
