Could NFL have Done More to Help after Katrina?

A year has passed already since Katrina devastated New Orleans with its 145 miles per hour wind and following floods. Warrick Dunn, Atlanta Falcon’s running back, was so shocked that he felt compelled to do something, anything, to help all these people, and he challenged all NFL players to give $ 5000 each.
If all the players had been as generous and compassionate as him, this would have raised a sum of $ 8 millions! To date, Dunn has donated $ 381 000 to Habitat for Humanity to the community of Baton Rouge. He says he is not disappointed though, and is happy enough something could be done. The fact remains that this is the donation of approximately 76 players out of…How many? With a salary of $ 1.4 million a year for each player, one would have thought that more could be done.
Altogether, counting the NFL owners, the fans and the players, $ 22 millions was raised, and the league donated $ 15 million to rebuild the Superdrome. To the average citizens and mortals this sum may seem astonishing, but let’s not forget that a franchise has a value of about $ 898 millions. Everything is relative.
